Like many people, we have been making good use of the COVID-19 lockdown period, stuck at home, to get plenty of DIY done.
Dave and I had some water butts delivered recently, so decided to fit them into place, all interlinked and evenly spaced on neat stacks of bricks. We checked the hoses for water leaks: there were none. We were suitably proud of our handiwork. Now, we just had to wait for some rain to fill the butts.
Unusually for the UK, we were in a settled period of unseasonably warm, dry weather, and had to wait over a fortnight for our first rain. It came yesterday ... in torrents. But our water butts didn’t seem to be filling as quickly as we’d hoped.
Hmm, it seemed that, not only had we left all the water butt taps open by mistake (hard to tell which way is open and which is closed when the water butts are empty), but there was an even bigger problem. We’ve still no idea how it happened.
As they say, never overlook the obvious!
