Taking Notes

Combined Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths, Further Maths - KS3, GCSE, Level 2, A-level

Weekly, one-hour tutorials

Regular, one-to-one tutorials, fully adapted to each student’s individual needs, are optimal for helping to embed a proper understanding and enjoyment of a subject at an early stage and to assist with any difficulties that may arise in class, such as gaps in knowledge or techniques.

I aim first for conceptual understanding, followed by opportunities for the student to solve problems and apply their knowledge in answering questions.

At higher levels, I can also help students to gain a deeper insight and make the transition to a more independent way of working.

Combined Science - GCSE

SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY! Intensive, one-to-one revision and improvement courses

Four courses available (AQA Combined Science) â€“ Physics Paper 1, Chemistry Paper 1, Physics Paper 2, Chemistry Paper 2.

Each course comprises 4 x 90 minute tutorials across two weeks.

Ideal for those students who, for whatever reason, missed out on prior tutoring and especially those aiming for grade improvement.

By focusing apace on key topics and skills, primarily through the lens of past GCSE questions, these concentrated courses aim to enhance the student's understanding and application of knowledge in fundamental topic areas where the most rapid benefits may be achieved.

My Approach to Tutorials

'Understand the topic, be able to answer the questions'

First and foremost, I aim for my students at all levels to really understand and be able to conceptualise the topic at hand. Where students have not understood at school/college during class, I use a range of techniques to assist understanding, including analogy, visualisation, derivation and linking across topics. I have a track record of working through explanations that are accessible to all, with ‘points to ponder’ to stretch the more gifted.

Once we have achieved understanding, the next step is applying it to interpret and solve problems. This can be done in different ways, and exam tips and techniques also come up here. For example, I can provide questions that the student and I will work through together in the tutorial, or the student may send through 2-3 questions from school/college that they have found difficult and we can work through those instead. Occasionally, and only if the student wishes, I may set a small amount of homework to help consolidate the week’s learning.

Although improved comprehension and application of science and maths is my primary aim, this often translates into improved results in tests and exams. For example, my very first student (KS3) was struggling to understand science or reach a pass mark in her school tests. After a handful of tutorials, she not only passed her next science test, but achieved the highest score in the class, in excess of 90%.

My first two GCSE students were having difficulties passing their Combined Science mocks. After my intensive, one-to-one revision and improvement courses, one in each of chemistry and physics, one student went up by around 2 grades in their resits and the other right from an ungraded 0 to grade 6.

At all levels, my approach is friendly, energetic, down to earth, confident and approachable. I adapt to each student’s individual needs, really care about my students, and hope to enthuse them with my genuine love of science and maths!

Currently, I offer private tuition on weekdays in the late afternoons and early evenings, mainly online but some face-to-face, and operate a waitlist when over-subscribed. I am also tutoring daytimes in a local secondary school as part of the National Tutoring Programme.

I am based in NW Hampshire between Andover and Winchester.
